Ronnie Counihan and chef Tim O’Sullivan run one of Ireland’s best destinations, out there on the westerly shores, in a house that is a place and a passion unto itself. It is hard to know who loves Renvyle more: McKenna adults? Or McKenna children? Guess we will have to just take another trip to this magical little universe and then argue the toss one more time.Mr. O’Sullivan’s cooking, in particular, is amongst the finest country house cooking anywhere in Europe, both hugely disciplined and yet enjoying a free-form energy that makes it seem as if he has just dreamt it all up. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that what Renvyle offers is “hotel” food. It isn’t: this is cutting-edge cooking from a master chef who is currently at the very height of his powers. Put that food in an energised dining room, with excellent service, and which boasts a competent pianist who even manages some Chopin, so do ask for a mazurka as you sip your wine and relish dinner. Chopin seduced the piano: this will seduce you.
