The night of 31 October, the eve of All Saints' Day, often celebrated by children dressing up in costumes and masks and playing traditional games. Halloween is thought to be associated with the Celtic festival Samhain. Samhain had three distinct elements. It was an important fire festival, celebrated over the evening of 31 October and throughout the following day. The flames of old fires had to be extinguished and ceremonially re-lit by druids.
