RENVYLE HOUSE JOIN HISTORIC HOTEL OF EUROPE COLLECTION

We are thrilled to have been invited to join the appealing hotel collection of the most important and unique properties in Europe.  Historic Hotels of Europe member properties are carefully chosen as those who have retained their history, combining authentic heritage with exceptional standards of service and the finest gastronomic delights.

Renvyle House Hotel has a great history;  A Chieftain of one of the oldest and most powerful Gaelic clans in Connacht once lived on the site where Renvyle House is now built.  It was home to the Blake Family who were landlords and owned the peninsula as far as Lettergesh East in the 1800’s and it was Mrs. Caroline Blake who first opened it as a hotel in 1883 to help with her Land League debts.

The house was sold in 1917, before the War of Independence to surgeon, poet, novelist, classicist, wit and Senator Oliver St. John Gogarty. It was burned to the ground during the Irish Civil War in the early 1920’s by the IRA, as were many other home of Government supporters and members of Government. The house was rebuilt by Gogarty and his wife as a hotel in the late 1920’s in the Arts & Crafts style, much of which is preserved by the current owners to this day.  It has been in the ownership of the Coyle family since 1952.

Renvyle House has played host to many historic people including the Artist Augustus John, Lady Gregory, W.B. Yeats and Churchill among them.
